When the air coming out of the vents isn't cold, the cause is usually one of a few things: the refrigerant charge is low because of a leak, a component in the system isn't doing its job, the compressor isn't engaging, or a control or blend door problem is sending the wrong air to the cabin. Each of those is a different repair, which is why the system gets tested before anything is replaced.

Cold air that barely reaches you is a different problem from air that isn't cold. Weak airflow commonly comes from a clogged cabin air filter, a failing blower motor or resistor, a blocked evaporator, or a blend/mode door that isn't moving. We check airflow at the vents as part of diagnosis so the right side of the system gets the attention.

An air conditioning system is sealed. If it's low, refrigerant escaped — often at a hose, seal, O-ring, condenser or the compressor shaft. Finding and repairing the leak is the durable fix; simply recharging a leaking system sends the same refrigerant back out and leaves you where you started.

The compressor is the heart of the system, and it gives warning signs before it quits: a clutch that won't engage, cycling on and off rapidly, a squeal on startup, or a grinding or rattling noise when AC is switched on. Noises that change with engine speed or only appear with the AC on are worth describing exactly when you call — it speeds up diagnosis.

Diagnosis includes checking vent temperatures and airflow, inspecting the belt, compressor, condenser and lines, verifying the electrical controls and pressure switches, and reading system pressures. The same ducting and controls handle heat, so we look at heating complaints too — no heat, heat only on one side, a defroster that won't clear the glass, or a temperature setting that doesn't change anything. A defroster that can't clear the windshield is also relevant to your state inspection.
